Just try to find a plain, white wall in Paula Blackwell' spacious Oregon home. Cocoa-colored dutch brush warms the dining room, antique damask-like texture adorns the master bath, an ivory-cracked stucco surrounds the living room, and a subtle tone-on-tone granite marble embellishes the kitchen countertops. A decorative painter, Paula has unleashed her talent to surround herself in beauty, demonstrating how paint and plaster treatments can dramatically change the personality of an ordinary house. Paula stencils, applies glazes, and creates textures that mimic vintage-worn plasters.
Paula says "I love textures, especially in a room where you want to evoke a sensual feeling, such as in a master bedroom. They can create a matte, muted appearance that is very serene. A textured surface absorbs light, as opposed to a glazed wall that will reflect the light. Textured surfaces tend to absorb or buffer sound as well, making them a nice finish for large open rooms where noise is a problem."
Paula continues to take classes from other faux-finish artisans and is always on the look-out for new textures and techniques. Instructors include; World Renowned Author Pierre Finklestein, Master Artisan Michele Nadai, Kelly King of the Faux Finishing Institute, Melony Royals - Royal Design Studio, Faux Masters, Faux Effects International.
